“The Seventh Sense”

Senior Show, 2019

In 2019, for my senior graduating show, I explored the social disparities that occur within the world of Korean pop music, including slander, silencing of mental health issues, and whitewashing. The artist statement is as follows:

Korean pop music is thriving, its fanbase increasing worldwide at a fantastic pace. Picture perfect boy bands and girl groups, the individuals referred to as “idols”, have integrated themselves into the charts one debut and comeback at a time. But popularity aside, KPOP is an industry built on manufacturing these idealized versions of people according to the collective external predispositions of their mother country; in the process, society and culture have turned humans into literal idols. Objects of worship, at the mercy of the masses. Why have we chosen to forget their humanity for the sake of fame? And what will it take to change the cold world they face?
